Whether your pool is topped up from municipal mains, a private well, or a desalination supply, the mineral load tends to run high in calcium, magnesium and dissolved salts. Add relentless summer heat, high evaporation and constant top-ups, and you have the perfect recipe for scale. Left unchecked, that chalky build-up does more than spoil the look of your tiles, it quietly attacks the equipment you rely on. Here is a practical look at why scale forms in Gulf pools, spas, ponds and fountains, and how to keep it from costing you.
Why Gulf Water Turns to Scale
Scale is what happens when dissolved minerals, mainly calcium carbonate, fall out of solution and harden onto surfaces. Two regional factors push this along. First, the raw water here often carries elevated calcium hardness from the outset. Second, the climate concentrates it. With evaporation rates in the Emirates running extremely high through the summer, every litre that evaporates leaves its minerals behind while the water you add brings in more. Hardness creeps upward week after week.
Temperature is the accelerator. Hot water holds less dissolved calcium, so the warmest parts of your system, heaters, heat exchangers and spa shells, are exactly where scale deposits first and thickest. High pH and high alkalinity, both common when you are constantly adding fresh hard water, tip the balance further toward deposition.
Where Scale Does the Most Damage
The damage is rarely cosmetic alone. A thin layer of scale inside a heat exchanger acts as insulation, forcing the unit to work harder and burn more energy to reach the same temperature, while running hotter internally and ageing prematurely. Salt chlorination cells are especially vulnerable, calcium coats the electrode plates, throttles chlorine output and shortens cell life dramatically. Pump seals, filter internals and automatic valves all suffer as deposits build on moving parts.
Fountains and water features show it fastest, nozzles narrow and clog, spray patterns collapse, and pumps strain against restricted flow. In ponds, scale on liners, pipework and UV clarifier sleeves reduces performance and complicates maintenance. Across every application, the pattern is the same: reduced efficiency, higher running costs, and equipment that fails years before it should.
Keeping Your Water Chemistry in Balance
The single most effective defence is balanced water, and the reference point is the saturation index that weighs pH, temperature, calcium hardness and alkalinity together. The aim is balanced water that neither deposits scale nor turns corrosive.
A few practical habits go a long way in Gulf conditions:
- Test regularly, especially in summer. Check pH, calcium hardness and total alkalinity at least weekly when evaporation is at its peak.
- Keep pH in the lower target band. Holding pH toward the 7.2 to 7.4 range, rather than letting it drift high, reduces the tendency to scale.
- Watch calcium hardness as it climbs. When top-ups push hardness too high, partial draining and refilling is sometimes the only reliable reset.
- Use a quality scale and stain inhibitor. A sequestrant dosed on schedule keeps minerals in solution and is cheap insurance for heaters and salt cells.
Equipment Choices and Routine Protection
Good chemistry buys you time, but the right hardware closes the gap. Consider pre-treatment on your fill line so you are not pouring in fresh hardness with every top-up. Heaters and exchangers built for higher mineral loads, generously sized salt cells, and self-cleaning or reverse-polarity chlorinators all cope better with regional water. For fountains, accessible nozzles and serviceable manifolds make descaling a quick job rather than a teardown.
Build a simple maintenance rhythm: inspect and descale heat exchangers and salt cells before each peak season, flush feature pipework periodically, and address early dulling on tiles before it hardens into stubborn scale. Catching deposits early, while still soft, is far easier than chiselling them off later.
